The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) introduced the ground-breaking Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas (BCGA) in February 2025. In order to close a significant vacuum in the country's cancer genomic data, it attempts to map the genetic landscape of cancer patients in India. Important Goals and Importance:


A Comprehensive Overview of Cancer in the Indian Context: In India, cancer is becoming more common, making it a serious health concern. The BCGA acknowledges that various communities may have distinct genetic compositions for malignancies. The atlas seeks to find genetic variants and biomarkers unique to cancer that are common in India by concentrating on Indian patients.
Prompt Identification and Tailored Care: For diseases like breast cancer, which are very common in India, the BCGA will assist in finding biomarkers for early identification. This will enhance patient outcomes and allow for prompt treatments. Additionally, personalized medicine—wherein therapies are customized based on a patient's genetic profile—will be made possible by the atlas.
Drug Development and Discovery:The BCGA would make it easier to find new therapeutic targets by comprehending the distinct genetic features of malignancies in Indian patients. This will hasten the creation of more focused and efficient treatments tailored to the Indian people.

Present Development:

Focus on Breast Cancer: Breast cancer is a common malignancy among Indian women, and it has been the focus of the BCGA's first phase. Numerous complete exomes from tissue samples taken from breast cancer patients nationwide have already been sequenced by the initiative.
Availability of Data:The BCGA website (bcga.iitm.ac.in) makes the generated data publically accessible, giving researchers a useful tool for their research.

The Directions for the Future:

Expanding Cancer forms: In order to create a thorough genomic atlas for a variety of cancers, the BCGA intends to extend its study to include more common cancer forms in India.
