Goa Mukti Diwas: A Day of Liberation
Commemorating the Liberation of Goa from Portuguese Colonial Rule
Every year on December 19, Goa Mukti Diwas, also known as Goa freedom Day, is observed to honor the 1961 freedom of Goa from Portuguese colonial control. Being the final area of Indian territory to be freed from foreign rule, it represents an important turning point in Indian history.
Goa was colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and they ruled over it for more than 450 years. However, a number of demonstrations and uprisings against Portuguese rule were sparked by the Indian independence movement as well as the escalating nationalist feelings in Goa.
