History
The Sahitya Akademi was established in 1954 as India’s National Academy of Letters. The first Sahitya Akademi Awards were presented in 1955. Since then, the award has been given annually to recognize important literary works. According to the Akademi, the award initially carried ₹5,000, which was increased several times over the decades. Since 2009, the award amount has been ₹1,00,000.
Purpose of the Award
The main objective of the Sahitya Akademi Award is to recognize the most outstanding books of literary merit published in the languages recognized by the Akademi. It encourages writers to produce high-quality literature and gives greater visibility to literature written in India's many languages.
The award also strengthens India's multilingual literary tradition by recognizing writers from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
